im looking to buy a moutpiece for a german clarinet. I know vandoren has some but i was told those are actually for the reform boehm clarinets. so they wont work for a german clarinet. or will they?

I don't know what model of Reform Boehm clarinet Vandoren had in mind when making their mouthpiece. Wurlitzer Reform Boehms have a German bore, and therefore use German mouthpieces (no 'special' Reform Boehm mouthpiece needed).

If you'd like to order a Wurlitzer mouthpiece, please feel free to contact us through the website below; we'd be happy to help.

I have tried one each of the Vandoren "German" and Vandoren "Austrian" style mouthpieces, and didn't like either one. Just one opinion. Played them on both Boehm and Oehler clarinets, by the way.

Viotto makes fine mouthpieces for Oehler and Reform Boehm. Bas de jong is the European agent - don't know if there's a US agent.

MM????
I play Wurlitzer RB and my mouthpieces by both Wurlitzer (M3+) and
Viotto (N1+2, G3) are all marked for Reform Boehm.

kenb,

It was more common in the past for some Wurlitzer mouthpieces to be marked 'Reform Boehm.' These days, though, the mouthpieces we sell with R-Bs aren't marked that way--there's really no need to, as they'll work on either R-Bs or German system horns. The more important thing to note is that the Wurlitzer R-B won't play in tune or with proper reponse with French style mouthpieces.

The history of the mouthpiece markings makes it seem more complicated than it is!

I have a B40D which I play with an Buffet Crampon RC clarinet. The sound is lovely and the intonation is spot-on. My only complaint is that, like the B40, it is very resistant and tiring to play for long periods. Works best with Rue Lepic 2.5 reeds in my experience.

A colleague of mine goes to war with a VD German 'piece stuck into his Selmer. He likes it for dixie and big band clarinetting because it is loud. Add a #5 read and be heard over the 'bones and trumpets.

He rolls a couple of o-rings over the reed and mouthpiece table instead of risking his shoe laces. He likes it just fine, but then, he knows how (and when) to play in tune.

The VD mouthpieces not only will play on a German clarinet well, but on the French clarinets. I spent a good deal of time playing on one because I was looking for a mouthpiece with a lot more resistance than the one I already had. That was the perfect mouthpiece, it plays very well and focuses the sound like you wouldn't believe. I highly recommend them (next to the Backun of course...).
