I've been working on Rose number 8 for almost a month now, and thus far have got virtually all of it down. But what I can't seem to get my fingers around are the two measures of octave jumps, numbers 35 and 36. The first two (G, A) sound fine, but what follows is disgraceful: a bunch of inaudible notes, undertones, and squeaks.
I have a hunch that the problem might be a result of improper coordination of the left thumb on the register key, but am not entirely certain of this. That might explain why the higher notes don't sound.
Could anyone offer any advice?

Is this from the 32 Etudes or the 40? It would help if you could scan those two measures and put them up as an attachment.

From the description, it must be #8 from the 32 Studies.
You're right that the most likely cause is your left thumb - possibly you're moving it too far and opening the bottom of the thumb hole. You might also be squeezing your left hand and opening the throat G# hole. Any of the fingers you need to add might be missing their holes - my experience is that the ring fingers are the most likely culprits on my hands, but your fingers may be different. You may be moving the mouthpiece around in your mouth and upsetting your embouchure. Probably there are other possibilities as well that I'm not thinking mof off the top of my head.
A teacher observing you as you try to play these measures might be a great help because he/she could see and hear, while here only your description is available. But if you practice this yourself, it's important, I think, to play the leaps very slowly - one octave at a time. Don't even think of playing the passage as it's written until each of the intervals is under control. As you execute each octave, be very conscious of your fingers. If the top note doesn't come out, try, continuing to blow lightly and move fingers one at a time to try to locate the one that isn't covering. Try articulating to see if the same thing happens as when you slur.

I just move my Rose 32 in front of the Baermann and had a play through Rose 8/32.
My take on it is that you are playing those "over the break" measures too fast.
Free advice (worth the price? ...maybe): Set your metronome to 1/16 = 60 and play it several times until every note comes out clearly, speaks beautifully and starts right on the metronome click.
When you've got that down, increase the tempo bit by bit.
I've got that etude marked for 1/4 = 120. So once you get things right at 60, you'll only need to accelerando by a factor of 8!
