I have searched the archive but this is information that updates anyway so I'll ask the group. I'm interested in some jazz playalong book/cd sets. I'm familiar with (and enjoy) the Aebersold and other stuff that has been around for a while but I was wondering if anyone had come across any new material that was worth considering. By example, I've just seen the Wynton Marsalis standards book/cd set online but it seems to be out of stock/print so I haven't heard it yet.
Anyone got any tips in the area of new jazz/popular/etc. playalongs?
Thanks.

If you don't have it, consider purchasing Band in a Box - it's pricey but it stopped me from buying another backing track ever again. Combined with Garageband on a Mac it lets me create just any kind of play along I could wish for - and I regularly use them professionally.
The use of real instruments to create the tracks has revolutionised this software for me.
I tried a little experiment with some pretty competent students where I recorded a sax solo over a BIAB track, let the software itself produce a solo and then ask them to tell me which was me - most found it hard and I got a 50/50 split on right and wrong. It's also great for practising progressions in isolation.

The only other tracks I'm happy to use at a live gig are Jazzbacks.

I know these aren't book sets, but thought they may be of use - and they all tally with standard Real Books.

I use Garageband for making my own backing tracks but I'm restricted to those instruments I can play. How do you use Garageband with BIAB? I played with BIAB some years ago and it always sounded really cheesey to me.
I take this back. I've just looked at a BIAB/Mac tutorial on Youtube and it is way more sophisticated than it was a few years ago.
Again, thanks for the tip. I'll look into this.

BIAB can export it's audio tracks - simply drag them to Garageband and it will import them. I then add other instruments on top to get the full effect of particular tracks.
