I have a Buffet R13 less than a year old. My former teacher helped set it up with a Morgan mouthpiece; it played sharp so we put a moennig 67mm barrel on it and all was fine. Except...the mouthpiece required more air than I have as an older player. I've recently bought a Lomax Chicago 11 mouthpiece, which I love. However, using the same reeds, ligature and barre now I'm playing flat. Do I need to go back to a 66mm barrel? Would a totally different barrel be better?

Yes, I use a Morgan too and they tend to play a bit sharp so I have 67s on my Buffets too but a 62.5 on my Selmer, but that's a different story. Get a shorter barrel. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

My former teacher is a one size fits all guy...hence former. I was using a Morgan classic and VanDoren 3 or 3 1/2 reeds at his insistence. It took all my breath to get a couple of measures out and even then my tone wasn't very good. With the Lomax mp air isn't much of a problem. I have some 65 and 66 cocobolo Backun fatboys coming tomorrow. I agree with everyone's assessment of their service; they actually listened to my needs and made some suggestions. I'm really eager to see how they play.

I ended up with six cocobolo "fat boys" from Backun, three 65's and three 66's. Glad I got the 65's since they play in tune or a tiny bit sharp. These are marvelous barrels. Short and fat like me, but easy to play with a wonderful clear, dark tone. I've played the same scales at least a hundred times on each barrel and keep coming back to one of the 65's. I didn't know playing could be so much fun!
