 Selmer Console London

G'day. Noticed others asking about Selmer Clarinets. I have just rediscovered my clarinet, which I bought when I was about ten, nearly 40 years ago. It was not new then, but came in a black case with red felty lining. It is marked Selmer Console London then in small letters "foreign". It is not in A1 condition, but with a clean and polish and a new set of pads, I think it would be lovely. Bought a new reed the other day and it sounds all right.

My question is, would anyone be able to tell me what sort of value it might have now? I live in country Victoria, and am keen to start saving for a tractor. Not a new one, an old Fergie. Might the clarinet provide the start of a deposit?

Hope someone can give me some idea please. I'd be very grateful.
Cheers

Insurance value is the same as a Buffet E11 or Yamaha YCL-450 - as for resale value, that all depends on the condition and the market value.

These were either French, Italian or Czech depending where Selmer London sourced them from and some of the 'Steel Ebonite' ones were Chinese (Lark).

Dear Chris
Thanks for that. Please forgive my ignorance, but I have no idea of the value of a Buffet E11 or Yamaha YCL-450. Condition reasonable, but think could be good if I give it some professional love (clean, polish and new pads). Did invest in a couple of new reeds the other day, having stopped playing when my hands stopped working properly, and it still sounds OK to me, but I am not a professional.
Thanks though from a little farm not far from the Great Divide in flood/cyclone/fire-ravaged & locust-plagued Oz.

Not sure what the Australian value for thse clarinets would be, but you can search that Dreaded AuctionSite, and look up Completed Auctions for the going rate for a Buffet E11 or a Yamaha 450 in your part of the world.

Current US retail selling price at WWBW for new ones is:
Buffet E 11 (German manufacture, made by Schreiber) $1045
Buffet E11 France (Newer model, French-made) $1495
Yamaha 450 $1045

Hope that helps.Above figures in US dollars.

From my memories of the Selmer Console of 40-50 years back I would say they were a very average student clarinet in those days and considerably below the standard of say an E11 today (and I'm not particularly keen on E11s) and well below a Yamaha 450.
I would honestly say that it's current value is likely to be quite low e.g. in UK I would think about £50-80 top.

I would much prefer an old Fergie too..

Dear Norman
Thanks for your post. Think the best idea might be to have someone look at it. Only problem is isolation, the nearest city being more than an hour away and many roads missing bits after floods. Even if your modest estimate is right, it'd be a desposit, as I've seen reasonable old Fergies for around $2000 Aust (parity with $US now)
Thanks again.

I wouldn't rate a Console as being equivalent to an E11 or YCL450, I've had one and would rate it as about equal to a good Signet 100. I'd be reluctant to pay more than $A200, and it would have to be in good nick for that.
Good luck with your quest for a grey Fergie, but I don't think you'll find much around $A2000. I've seen them, but you'd need to spend another grand on them.

It is the equivalent to an E11 or YCL-450 in terms of it being an entry level wooden clarinet, so for insurance purposes it should be insured for the retail price of either of these.

What the used market value is all depends on the general condition and what anyone is willing to pay for it and how it rates against an E11 or YCL-450 was something I never mentioned or suggested.
