I had a student come in today to my general music class with his clarinet. When he opened the case, there was a gasp from the class - a beautiful black wood (or so it appeared) clarinet with shiny gold keys. The kids thought it was gorgeous, and worth a million bucks.
The poor boy couldn't play it at all, so I took out my mp and... I could hardly play it either. The keys were a mess (to be fair, the boy had trouble putting the instrument together - couldn't remember which parts went where, so I am sure they keywork has taken a fair amount of abuse) and it was fairly unresponsive. I had to work pretty hard to get any kind of sound at all on it.
I don't know what he does in his band class or lessons, but I felt so bad for him.
I don't know anything about these instruments - can anyone enlighten me? The only marking on it was "Schill" in fancy script on the bell.

That's a CSO - a Clarinet Shaped Object. They typically sell for rather low prices on auction sites, and are about worth what you were paying for them.
I don't know if a repair person can bring them into a playable (and lastingly playable) state.
(Most kids would be better off with a $50 Bundy off That Auction Site plus another $150 to have it refurbished...)
