Brook Mays music is advertising a wood clarinet: "Klose model BE11"
Does anyone know anything about this instrument?
Where is it made, quality, tuning tendencies, etc?
I find the 'E11' in the model number interesting. I would speculate this is an attempt to capture some of the Buffet E-11 market. I also find the marketing literature amusing 'award wining', 'professional quality', etc.
If anyone has some information on this model they could share, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

Notice the trill guide for just the top trill key set high up the joint which is hardly ever done on Boehm systems nowadays - most makers have a larger trill guide lower down the joint for both trill keys.
I'm wondering if it might be made by Amati.

OMFG.
And For Some Reason I Don't Like Whole Paragraphs With Initial Caps As Demonstrated In The Brook Mays Web Site.

Maybe They Don't Know Which Words Are Proper Nouns So Capitalise All Of Them Just To Be On The Safe Side.

At least it isn't advertised as "Supervised by French Technicians" or "Designed under Supervision of German Engineers" or whatever the Chinese-made clarinets and saxophones used as a marketing pitch.
Jeez.........

the 64.5mm barrel is another clue - but i was hoping someone here had actually touched one. i was asked if this would be ok to recommend for a school district (we're not happy with buffet and are looking for an alternative).
so i need to know enough about this thing to say yay or nay, and then support my conclusion.

A 64.5mm barrel is standard for many A=442 pitched clarinets. Nothing wrong with that, but you could be in for a longer 'un in your region.
So, per your school district:
- it is a brand no one has heard before. "Klose" suggests it's just a copyright-expired name (I don't think it's the German soccer player) that rings a bell with clarinetists. Expect to see a Lazarus or Baermann clarinet soon.
- it is not substantially cheaper than other, better established (aka more widespread) brands.
- for a school programme you want to have something "field tried and tested" re adjustment, repairs and so on, not a "new" model.
- it is probably a pitched at A=442 which might require a longer barrel.
I'd say nay.

You can email them and ask where it is amde and by which company. Isn't there a law that says they have to say where something is made (maybe not)?

I have serviced many of these clarinets, and played several (beyond checking repair work). Let me preface my comments by saying that I am primarily a euphonium player, and play clarinet for fun, and have neither a developed sound concept nor technical facility for the clarinet.
These instruments are made in the Czech Republic, and this is stamped on each clarinet along with the serial number.
They are pretty well made with sturdy keywork. Good clean tone quality, but perhaps a bit "smaller" or "tighter" than the newer Buffet International ("E11+") I compared it to. I can't comment on intonation tendencies; if there is interest, I can play-test it for these tendencies. I don't think the tone holes are undercut.
They play better than most of the plastic stuff, so I wouldn't hesitate to give this instrument to a middle or high schooler.

Stop blaming your instrument and get in a practice room.
