 Evette with a bronze bore
Author: BillW

I like to fix old clarinets. I bought an Evette "sponsored by Buffet" and noticed while oiling it that the 2 joints are plastic and that the top joint has a bronze liner.
Can someone explain this?

I've seen the same clarinets (ebonite body with nickel silver top joint bore lining) but with different names (Buisson, Selmer Console, etc.) but didn't understand why they needed the metal sleeved top joint as many ebonite bodied clarinets have been made without them both before and since.

One of them even had a broken middle tenon - just the ebonite part had been broken off and come away and the protruding metal liner was left oval and at a funny angle. However, it was possible to straighten it out and then glue the broken tenon back on.

The opinions I express are my own.

I am going to repad the clarinet, and will report how it plays. It may have been created for more volume or a brighter sound. I could use either in my band.
