Hi. New here. I played clarinet & tenor sax in HS, but haven't played in 40+ years. I recently inherited a sax and clarinet. My uncle had played with big bands in the 30s & 40s. The Clarinet is Selmer with a Dick Stabile Special mouthpiece, but there was also a Pedler mouthpiece and barrel. The Pedler barrel is approx. 3/4" shorter than the Selmer barrel.
Would my uncle have used this shorter barrel with the Selmer? Why?

I can't speak for the older Selmer clarinets but I use 67mm on my Buffet Bb and A clarinets but a 62.5 on my Selmer Signature. Standard barrels are 65 or 66 for Buffets but the Selmer comes with a 62.5 and a 64. It has to do with the difference in the bore of the different make clarinets. I suspect that's the same reason as with yours. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

A barrel that short sounds as though it came from a simple (Albert) system clarinet which like the German system clarinets developed from them have always used much shorter barrels than Boehm system.
Any barrel that short used on a french system clarinet e.g. Selmer, would totally destroy it's intonation.

I think you're absolutely right Norman. The short barrel is almost certain to be from a Pedler Albert clarinet - they made many of them in the 20s & 30s

That makes it all the more puzzling that he had it. I remember asking him about Albert system when I was studying clarinet, and my recollection is that he had never played one. Thanks for the information. I suppose I'll never know for sure why he had this mouthpiece and barrel.

My A clarinet is a Boehm system made by V Kohlert Sons of Graslitz, Bohemia and it uses a 60 mm barrel. Your barrel did not necessarily come from an Albert or other simple system clarinet.

If one takes 3/4" (19mm) from length of typical Selmer Boehm barrel (65/66mm) the results is 46/47mm. I have never ever seen a Boehm barrel anywhere near this. Even my C Clarinert has a 53mm and my Eb is 42mm.
The only Albert system I have to hand (Hawkes Bb c 1920/1930) has a barrel of 58mm but I think the true German style clarinets can be appreciably shorter.
