 Lingering on trills in Pleyel
Author: Bob Phillips
Date:   2011-01-17 19:40

I have the Breitkipf & Hartel MR 1164 edition of the Pleyel Clarinet Concerto in C-Major.

In the first movement, in measure 153 there is a B5 dotted half note tied to a B5 quarter note. Only the dotted half note is marked for trilling.

I'm tempted to stop the trill on the 4th beat.

In measure 167, a trilled whole note B5 is tied to the B5 whole note in the next measure. That whole note drops to an A5 in measure 169 with grace notes.

Here, I'm tempted to stop trilling after measure 167.

At the end of the movement, two measures worth of whole notes are EACH marked for trilling.

My reasoning is that, if Pleyel had wanted the measure 153 trill to continue he would not have bothered to separate out the 4th beat; and if he shows by example in the last measure of the solo that he would write in the continuation of the trill if that is what he had in mind.

What do you folks think?
Thanks

Thank you Peter, you are always so generous with your help to we, the members of this BB.

I also went in search of performance examples of "the" Pleyel on youTube.

Interestingly, I found these by Dan Sagi:

BUT THEY ARE NOT THE MOVEMENTS OF MY CONCERTO.

I did find the inner movement of "my" Playel performed charmingly by Alexander Neubauer at

Now, I've got to find that "other Pleyel."

Paul Meyer has recorded two Pleyel Concerti (in Bb and C) on Denon CO-78911. Luyben Music lists two different Pleyel Concerti (Bb and C) in its online catalog.

Best regards,
jnk
