 Philadelphia Substitute Principal
Author: kdk

My wife and I attended a Philadelphia Orchestra concert last night (1/15). The first half was all string music. After intermission came Dvorak 8th. The man playing principal clarinet was someone I didn't recognize. Played beautifully, I thought, but I'm not certain why neither Ricardo Morales nor Sam Caviezel played.

I just wondered if anyone reading this happened to be at the concert (or the performance on Thursday night) and knows who the 1st player was.

Karl, Ricardo Morales is out west this weekend, working with Morrie Backun on the release of their new clarinets at the NAMM show in LA. The instruments look beautiful, from the photos on Morrie's Facebook page!

So, I guess he wasn't scheduled to play the Dvorak in the first place. I wonder why Caviezel didn't play, unless he was scheduled but got sick (like everyone else in this area this week). <shrug>

Ricardo will be back this coming week because I'm going to Philly next week to visit with him and hear him play Beethoven 6th. I hope he remembers how I taught him to play it. :( ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Btw - the Dvorak was a program change from the Bruckner Sym. which Todd told me was on the schedule.

Has Todd Levy left Milwaukee for Minneapolis? What happened to Burt Hara?

Well, apparently, Sam Caviezel is on parental leave. Per Jeff's post above, Morales is at NAMM. He played last week for the Mozart Requiem and the Debussy Nocturnes.

I hear that Tod Levy plays principal clarinet with the Milwaukee Symphony and Santa Fe Opera. He seems (based on the one symphony performance) like a very impressive player.

The program change was the result of the original conductor's (Donald Runnicles) having developed back trouble, according to Peter Dobrin (a local newspaper critic). Gianandrea Noseda, who was conducting this week at the Met, conducted the two performances of the subscription series here. The Part Collage uber B-A-C-H (to have been a first Philadelphia performance) was replaced by the 3rd Ancient Airs and Dances Suite by Respighi and the Bruckner 7th was replaced by the Dvorak (8th).

It was a delightful surprise to hear a solid performance from an unfamiliar (to us) conductor and an excellent (also unknown to us) clarinetist.

I've been told since the post above that Ricardo Morales is indeed also on parental leave - the Mozart-Debussy concert I heard him play on January 8 may have been an exception caused by a conflict Levy had back in the Milwaukee S.O. that weekend.

I heard that Todd Levy won the audition for the 2nd chair in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Could someone confirm this?

After this past weekend's series it ended (Ricardo's leave) - that's what Todd said Monday a week ago.

S.H.J., that would be Todd Cope for Vancouver.
