 Prescreening not received
Author: BrianC

I dont know how many people here are family with the college audition process... but here's my problem.
I applied to Northwestern's Bienen School of Music for clarinet performance, but my prescreening CD wasn't received. I don't really know what to do about because I spent a lot of time making the CD. They say that i can still send in a recorded audition, but that I cannot be invited for a live audition. Northwestern was one of my top choices and I'm really upset that my prescreening got lost in the mail. Should I email the music school admissions? I've had a lesson with a teacher at Northwestern, should i contact him? Is it even possible to still ask for a live audition or will the college be strict in its parameters?

Did you send it certified mail? Stuff like that, it's good to have some sort of delivery confirmation, or at least confirmation that you sent it.

I was denied admission to a college because they said the application wasn't received, but we had the certified mail receipt, AND they had cashed the application fee check (so it got lost between two of their offices). Got an apology letter and an offer.

I agree 100%. Anything that important should go with tracking and delivery confirmation, where someone has to sign for it.

The advice about receipted delivery is all good, and should help next time.

In the meantime, look at this as an opportunity to apply your political acumen --it is a good time to exploit what you've heard about it being who, not what you know.

Best of luck.

I applied to the prescreening as well and when I was waiting to hear, I was checking my online application status frequently. For the longest time it had said they had not received the full application so I e-mailed them and the problem was solved. The woman who I was in contact with was Deborah and her e-mail is: d-truschke@northwestern.edu. I would try contacting her directly if I were you.
I'm guessing with Northwestern though, they aren't going to budge on their rules even though you had followed the deadlines as far as you were aware. Definitely contact the professor you took the lesson with, too.
Good luck with your auditions! If all else fails, start somewhere else and try to transfer into Northwestern next year!

Yes, of course, contact the instructor, also ask who the head of administration is and talk to that person as well. Another option is sometimes these top schools have auditions outside of Northwestern. Ask if the auditions will be held in any other city. I have no idea if Northwestern auditions in other states.
