I am currently playing the Prokofiev Quintet with some really phenomenal musicians. We would love to do more with the group, and I was wondering if anyone knew of ANY other pieces for this instrumentation. A quick google search yielded a piece called Diversions by Nigel Keay, and one called Three Pieces from the Suite "Ecstasy" by Jonathan Besser, both from New Zealand. Anyone know of any others?

Just to make sure...this is the oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and bass quintet?

It is a great piece! Let me know what else you find. I actually want to play it again. I played it in undergrad, and I want to play it again as a mature musician! I wouldn't mind learning the clarinet and/or violin parts as well.

It is an unusual combination and I doubt that you will find anything else but it would be interesting if you did, especially if it was a quality piece. ESP

I'm working on trying to get the full Trapeze ballet, but at nearly $500 for Boosey & Hawkes to just print the score, I'm not getting my hopes up. Does anyone know of a library that has this?

If anyone's curious, here is information about the Trapeze ballet, with 2 extra movements added from the quintet for an extra 5 minutes of music.

Just recently I saw an online pdf for the booklet of a Decca CD by the Melos Ensemble of London where the Prokofiev Quintet is included (http://www.buywell.com/booklets/4802152.pdf). Raymond Tuttle states in the text: "The troupe’s limited resources explain the ballet’s unusual scoring, and indeed, it is difficult to find other works in the classical repertory so scored. (New Zealand-born composer Nigel Keay wrote one in 2003, called Diversions.)"

I'm sure he did a thorough search in preparing those notes, so seems that my work was the next to be written for that formation after Prokofiev's. I just noted that Prokofiev wrote his Quintet very soon after moving to Paris - that was also the case for me in 2003, I moved here mid 2001.

At the time of writing my Diversions for Quintet I didn't think too much about how much repertoire there was for that combination. I'd just played the Prokofiev Quintet and have a habit of writing for groups I've played in. Afterwards I thought it would be good one day to do an entire quintet concert, so suggested to Jonathan that he produce something. His Quintet is actually a "classical" version for a work already written for an improvising group.

Perhaps you might transcribe something? Shostakovich's 24 preludes and fugues op. 87, in particular #13 which is for five voices, would be worth a look. If you don't want to deal with copyright issues, there' always the Well Tempered Clavier.

ha ha, i can't resist putting in my 10 cents here, Jonathan Besser walks past my flat every so often- yesterday in fact, and he often looks up and waves if he hears music playing. Knowing his love of Klez and Trad jazz, i burnt him a copy of Hairy Jazz by Shel Silverstein with the Red Onion Band and ran out to give him a copy the next time he walked by... I'll ask him about this quintet next time i see him (which may be in half an hour, or not for another week).

 Greetings,

In 2006 my ensemble, Inscape, commissioned a composition for the exact instrumentation of the Prokofiev quintet. The result was Anachrony, By Justin Boyer, a tremendous success. I strongly suggest trying this work.

There work can be obtained through the composer, and there is a clip of the piece on the website....

 thanks
