NYC must be a tough town if a resident needs all those weapons to protect himself.

I'm not sure why this is a news story. Other than the AK-47 (which may be legal depending on when he bought it / when it was made) there is nothing illegal on the list. Switchblade knives are legal to own in New York provided that the owner has either a fishing or hunting license.

Since when is it illegal to own a few weapons or even to keep loaded guns as long as no threats or other actions have been made against anyone?

¿Which of Artie's wives was the mother? The kid doesn't look anything like Ava Gardner.

Sounds like over-reacting to me.
I understand "better to be safe than sorry" but it doesn't make any sense. He did nothing to hurt anyone, I get why they could assume the worst regarding his intentions, but this is making a mountain of a mole hill.

Some real rarities in that collection. I'll bet that "mossbeg" 12Ga Pump-action pistol is the only one in the whole world! Likewise that Lee-Enfield .30cal pistol. Real collector's pieces........

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. In the authors rush to make the collection look menacing, they made quite a few errors.

In New York city, if you want to be legally compliant you are better off assuming ANY gun is illegal. When my father moved from Long Island to NYC, he was so worried that his firearms would now be illegal, rather than deal with the hassle of registration, he gave his collection to me. Nothing special, just some nice shotguns and rifles- It was the first time I was thankful for NYCs absurd gun laws.

In addition to the Mossberg and Lee-Enfield "pistols" howlers, apparently the New York Post can't spell "gauge" either.

I hadn't heard of the "you have to have a fishing or hunting license" exemption for switchblades...I have a feeling it applies in New York State, but not NYC. For those who don't know, in NYC you need a pistol license to own a pistol/revolver, and each one you have needs to be registered, and then RE-registered when you renew your license. (That's for "target" or "premises" usage; concealed-carry permits are practically impossible to get legally for regular folks, which is frankly fine with me.) I don't find the NYC regulations at all burdensome, and frankly i think the rest of the country would do well to adopt them--in addition to sky-high sentences for conviction of crimes committed with a firearm.

In its story, the Post had a good opportunity to inform the public about exactly what NYC's laws are, regarding Artie Junior's cache, and they blew that big-time (in addition to violating elementary spelling rules). I guess we can assume that some of his handguns were improperly registered; maybe the AK was full automatic (which IS strictly illegal in NYC), but because of the sketchiness of the Post story, we don't know, do we.

Clarinetistically, my neighbors consider ME armed and dangerous, especially when practicing, and my weapon of choice is merely an R13. (and before some wag asks, it does NOT have a silencer.)

Doug,

The average eefer could probably be considered as a "sonic weapon".

As for the hunting/fishing exemption for switchblades that is the NY state law. It's possible that NYC has some additional local ordinances I'm not aware of. Kind of a stupid exemption anyways as I don't think a switchblade would make a very good hunting knife.

The dispute over the AK-47 was probably due to the magazine capacity. The article probably would have stated if it was fully automatic and didn't, but it did lst the magazine capacity. As far as I know NY still forbids magazine capacities exceeding 10 rounds. This only applies to guns/magazines manufactured after 1994 however.

"the rest of the country" has the right to decide what amount of gun control they find is necessary, and tolerable. New Yorkers choose to live with shackles on themselves when it comes to personal defense-much of the rest of the country prefer to be more free. If New Yorkers like wearing chains, that is their business. What is good for New Yorkers, aint good for everyone else.
....and why not just have "sky high sentences" for conviction of crime? Why is firearm use necessary for such convctions. A person who commits a crime with a knife, or baseball bat, or clarinet, should not receive a lessor sentence than someone who commits the same crime using a firearm to express themselves.

Stay on at least the music track please. Gun control has its own BBoards.

salzo -

Gun crimes have, and in my opinion deserve, a greater penalty than the same crime committed without a gun. My wife was on a jury in which a stray bullet killed a man across the street from a gun fight over gang territory. That danger is inherent in the use of a gun.

I've never heard of a drive-by stabbing.

The article doesn't have a music track.
