I just purchased an H Bettoney Cadet silver clarinet, serial# A41108, patent# 1.705634 Can anyone tell me if I got a good deal? I payed $25 for the instrument and $15 for shipping...a $40 investment. From what I already read the Cadet was a "good" student model. What about the serial and patent #, can anybody tell me if what I have is authentic. It will need to be re-padded and perhaps some springs replaced...so would it be worth investing more money into?

With pad pads and bad springs, it's only good as a wall hanging or a lamp. Do you want a playable clarinet? Then get it repadded and fixed. Otherwise, enjoy your $40 wall hanging.

The clarinet is probably going to need a full overhaul. This is fairly typical of older instruments purchased from the auction site or some other classified ad. Whether the instrument is worth the investment in an overhaul is a matter of perspective. If you want a metal clarinet you are probably going to need to invest in an overhaul whether it is on this clarinet or a different one as very few of the metal clarinets sold on the auction site are in playable condition.
Personally I wouldn't invest in a overhaul on a student level metal clarinet since the difference in cost between the student models and the much better playing intermediate models is relatively negligible. Models like the HN White Cleveland and the H Bettoney Columbia can often be had for <$100 and play much better than the lower end models (after an overhaul of course).
