 Perfect combination for clarinetist
Author: miket
Date:   2011-01-04 15:15

A clarinet tutor told me that he has found a perfect combination in Gennusa Excellente mouthpiece, Bois clarinet ligature and the Xilema Artesana Clarinet reeds for his clarinet playing. Has anyone got the similar experience?

There are many, many great combinations. The Genusa is a very fine mouthpiece!!

My perfect combination would be good equipment (which I have) combined with talent (which I don't).

My perfect combination would be practice ethic (which I'm working on), and time to practice (which is different for all of us, but I'm trying to make mine work).

The equipment really isn't AS important as some people make it out to be (me included). I've got about five mouthpieces that ALL sound good and I can play on ANY of them. Sure I have my preferences, but they all work. I've learned (much later than I should have), spend the money on lessons and improving your technique first, equipment second or "as needed".

What is *perfection* has different meanings for all of us--there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution to our artistic and technical needs. FWIW, what is playing well for me is: vintage A & Bb Buffet R13's, Chicago Kaspar #14 mouthpiece, Vandoran Optimum lig and Forestone F4-4.5 reeds.

I'm actually extremely happy with my Genussa Ge mouthpiece, Xilema Artesana reeds and Vandoren Optimum Ligature. I haven't tried the Bois ligature though. Try some of these setups and see if you like it. I didn't know I'd like Genussa until I tried a friends, and fell in love with it.

Hello,

I'm glad so many people are happy with the Gennusa! Of course, I agree with Ed explicitly, it is wonderful that there are so many different great products to choose from! Happy New Year, everyone.

Dear Ben,

Glad to see you still active on the board. I reintroduced myself to your Excellent after a three year hiatus. It is truly a smooth playing mouthpiece with wonderful response in all registers. Makes me wonder why I ever tried anything else after that.

It's unfortunate that the word 'perfect' is being used, a more suitable word in this context would be "What is the most ideal set-up for you"

Hello Paul,

Good to hear from you. I wouldn't say I was active anymore! I'm so busy lately, I just check in from time to time. Cheers to everyone!

The perfect combination that works best for me:

Buffet Crampon "RC"
Vytas Krass "R-03" mouthpiece
Rovner Dark ligature
Vandoren Blue Box #3.5 reeds

The Vytas Krass "R-03" mouthpiece gave me the tone, intonation, projection, total clarity, flexibility, response and ease of playing that I was looking for. The Krass' mouthpieces are amazing! I never played anything like it.
