I am finishing number 34 and 35 Nutcracker performances with the Houston Ballet Orchestra today--I actually have played the Sugar Plum Fairy bass clarinet solo over 1,000 times over the past 30 years! It brings to mind several good thoughts. This is a time of year to enjoy the holiday season, to spend time with family and friends and to appreciate the life blessings we have. Every time I begin to complain about musical boredom,I remind myself that I am lucky to still , at age 65 , be able to perform at a reasonably high level with a real professional orchestra instead of the ballet company using tape, and that I am lucky to enjoy the company and musicianship of other players performing the beautiful music of the Nutcracker. Happy Holidays to all!

Merry Christmas to everyone (and the other holidays that are celebrated during this time of year as well; there are a lot and I don't want to start naming them only to leave something out).

Chetclarinet, there are a couple people in the orchestra I play in that are up there in years that are still going strong. Our current principal percussionist is 74 or 75, and our oldest member (a cellist) turned 90 this year! I can't imagine still playing at that age, let alone lugging my stuff to rehearsal (she carries her cello herself).
