 Enhanced Clarinet Vocabulary
Author: Lelia Loban 2017

Notice how the English language has evolved lately?

Old: Torture
New: Enhanced interrogation technique

Old: sexual molestation
New: enhanced pat-down procedure

Well, my goodness, we clarinet players need to keep up with the times! Therefore, a modest proposal for updating our old-fashioned vocabulary:

Old: squeak
New: enhanced altissimo

Old: can't read the music
New: uses enhanced aleatory technique

Old: plays out of tune
New: applies enhanced acoustical parameters

I'm sure we can enhance our vocabulary in many other ways!

Lelia, this is great!

In the educational community, new jargon is being constantly created. When I was in school, I never heard the word "rubric," but now it's everywhere. I will never forget a well-meaning assistant principal who once said in a staff meeting, "We now have to prioritize our objectives."

Here are my music suggestions:

Old: Plays out of tune (2)
New: Employing quarter tone possibilities

Old: Ugly squeak or squawk caused by an incorrect fingering, extra keys opened by mistake, and possibly an incorrect embouchure
New: Playing multiphonics

Old: Playing rhythms and articulations incorrectly in a group (band, orchestra, small ensemble) setting
New: Exploring improvisation

Old: (For conductors) Getting lost in the music and waving your hands around in windmills until you find your place or remember what meter you're trying to beat
New: Expressive conducting that gets to the heart and soul of the music. In other words, you're not one of those ordinary conductors who beats time like a robot.
