 Sad Story About a Clarinetist
Author: FDF
Date:   2010-11-11 21:24

A friend of mine, a lifetime player and instructor of clarinet is in intensive care at a local hospital. Music and the clarinet, plus other instruments, have been his life. The other night, after a rehearsal that he conducted, things didn’t go well. The band thought that a new direction might be needed. I am positive that my friend grieved over this situation.

A year ago his wife died, and life became difficult for him without her love and support.

The day after the difficult rehearsal, his housekeeper found him unconscious at the bottom of the basement stairs with his beloved clarinet close at hand.

He is now in the intensive care unit of a local hospital. Rumor is that he fractured his skull and his brain is suffering a hemorrhage.

My friend was a student of Portnoy. He lent his talents to many local musical organizations. To put it mildly, music was his life. May our hopes and prayers be with him and his family at this time.

Many people don't have runners on their basement stairs. In 2000, a former student's father took a fall on his basement stairs less than a week before Christmas and died from the head trauma.

Sad, and possibly preventable.

Yes, especially if the person wears socks while going down the bare steps. However while expecting our last child I managed to slip on carpeted stairs and sprained a toe that caught on the banister. Just stepped wrong..carpet can only help so much.

If your friend felt that he had lots of support and then perhaps a new direction to go once he's out of the hospital, perhaps he could have hope. Hope goes a long way towards helping someone recover... if the physical problems can be helped. Let's hope things go well with him!

Thanks for your prayers and good thoughts. My friend died this afternoon. The celestial choir now has another clarinet player.

CLARINET, n.
An instrument of torture operated by a person with cotton in his ears. There are two instruments that are worse than a clarinet -- two clarinets
