 Play with the Baltimore Sympnony
Author: Ed Palanker

Last year we began a program called the BSO academy. It's a week long experience of "rusty" or amateur musicians playing side by side with the members of the BSO. There are rehearsals every day and a concert at the end of the week playing major orchestral rep. as well as sectionals, master classes and lectures. Chamber music and private lessons are also available at extra cost. If you are interested, or know of anyone that plays any orchestral instrument that's interested, contact Lindsay Gomes at Igomes@bsomusic.org for information, costs etc. We will be doing it again in the month of June. Players are chosen via their resume's.

PS. Mention you heard about it from me on this bboard.

Thanks for your post about the program. I've sent in an email requesting more information. Besides considering if I want to apply, I'll probably share the information with a friend at the regional professional symphony near me. They have several good educational opportunities for children and youth, but not much beyond preconcert lectures for adults.

This sounds like a "fantasy camp". How much does this cost?

You should e-mail Lindsay at the address I posted for information on cost and everything else, they haven't posted the official site yet but she will help anyone interested. It is a great program for adults young and old. Of course they do screen because they can only take so many clarinetists. ESP

Ed, I probably would enjoy this immensely, but I am considering whether my daughetr (a current performance major) would get more benefit from this. Before we go down that path, she is doing a double major, so she should be more likely fto find a job. Would this be well suited for her, or is this more aimed at those of us who simply are the "adult hobbyiist" type?

JJ, It's opened to anybody so anyone can benefit and have a good time. We never know the caliber until they're all here but last year, our first year, it was a mixed bag. At least with the clarinets we had a very good player, my adult student, and two not nearly as strong. And one other cancelled the last minute due to illness. I suspect that we will have a larger pool to choose from this year so the standard should be a bit higher but it's not going to be like an advanced conservatory group but remember, it is side by side and we're there to coach and play along. Afalexi,You don't have to live in Baltimore, we had many out of towner's last year from as far a Florida in the case of one clarinet player. ESP
