Not a clarinet topic, but could have implications for dealing with clarinet related DVDs. My wife bought a DVD of a music performance and would like to listen to it on the CD player in her car on the way to and from work. Is there a way to extract the audio from the DVD to my hard drive so it could be burned back onto an audio CD? The converters I see online convert among a dozen different video formats but none promises to extract mp3, wav or any other audio format from any of them.

Are you mac or pc? It makes a difference.
If you are mac, it is easy. Download Handbrake (free), convert the dvd to an mp4. Drop the mp4 in garageband and delete the movie track. Save the audio track to iTunes and burn your cd.
If you are pc, I don't know. Sorry.

PC also has a version of Handbrake. Great program for creating digital copies of your existing dvd collection. Much easier to take them on vacation on a hard drive than bringing along 200 DVDs.

I've just downloaded HandBrake, which it turns out is available for Mac, Windows and Linux (which I also run on one of my machines). Looking forward to playing with it.

I've been using Audio Hijack for some time, on my mac, and loving it. It captures ALL audio your computer plays, from dvds, podcasts, mp3s, and you can use it to convert digital files from one digital filetype to another--I even use it as an analog-digital converter (phonograph line in, save as digital file). It comes with an accompanying editing program called Fission that's not terribly sophisticated, but does the job. Makes sense to get the pair of them: they're not free, but not expensive, and I couldn't live without them. Rogue Amoeba makes them; try their website.

I'm a "committed" PC user (though not necessarily to Windows, which I use interchangeably with Linux), so Mac-only software won't work for me. HandBrake did the job along with a sound editor to split the large mp3 into smaller segments so I could span the music over two CDs for use in my wife's car CD player. The job is now done.
