My teacher recommended that I switch from my Vandoran 5Lyre to the Vandoran M15 . I like the piece that I got from WW and BWs but I tend to squeek around High E and higher. Im assuming there will be an adjustment time for a new tip opening. I'm also assuming the Vandoran's to be fairly consistant? So I did'nt try a few. Maybe I should? K

Vandorens are consistant, but has poor material. The M15 is a closed mouthpiece with long facing, so you have to use really hard reeds.

They are good mouthpieces played by many. Be sure to get some new reeds to settle in rather than use your old ones. Every mouthpiece needs something a little different. Check the chart on the Vandoren site to see what they suggest for reeds.

What reeds are you using? You should, as mentioned above, try a new box of reeds of what you usually use and see how that goes. If needed, you should try a half strength stronger if it feels like the reed is closing off or out of control.
Personal thought regarding "really hard" reed comment:
I would never play, or recommend, someone play a "really hard" reed. I own vandorens in a wide range of facings (From the discontinued M14 to an M30 with 4 or 5 models in between) and wouldn't play anything stronger than a 3.5 blue box on any of them(personally). Some would require a strong 3 even. I could play a 4 or 4.5 on some, but would be working much harder with minimal improvement in sound and a great decrease in ease of response and flexibility.
Vandoren quality:
I would hesitate to say the material is "poor". I would say that there are other mouthpiece blanks that are higher in quality though...

Gee, never heard the "material thing" either. Unless someone knows something about vulcanized rubber that I don't know there should not be much difference............or maybe you're spending too much time on the Brad Behn website!!!!
I have also never found too much difference between the M15 and 5RV Lyre.......different yes, but do-able with the same strength reeds you presently use in my opinion.

I can't say I know much about vulcanised rubber, but I could say anytime with a blind test that I play on a new Vandoren or a vintage one. I simply feel the difference, like when tasting wines... They are simply better, although the existing model's paramaters didn't changed with time. I mean B45 was B45 even 20 years ago too. And this is just the difference between Vandorens.

I have just never experienced this myself (and I have had Vandorens since the early '70s). My guess is that the difference could well be internal dimensions such as the size of the tone chamber. As Greg Smith points out, getting a mouthpiece to respond a certain way is an intricate dance between the dimensions of the lay (thickness of rails, tip opening, length of lay) and the bore/tone chamber dimensions. One cannot just predict the playability of a mouthpiece simply by having exact lay dimensions alone.
I say this since material makes less difference to me, though I have preferred some of the wooden mouthpieces since they tend to be less "edgy" sounding.

I use a M15 or occasionally an ED1 with a Vandoren Optimum ligature & Legere Signature Series 3.5
