It appears that the 10S II was in production from 1992 - 2002. Your serial number was probably produced during the earlier part of that period. Attached link has a partial list of serial numbers and production dates.

I've looked everywhere for Selmer serial number lists, but they all stop at 1981. See http://dancipriano.com/iserialselmerclar.html. They seem to have changed the prefix letter every two or sometimes three years, so your F prefix should date from around 1989 or 1990.

If anyone knows about later lists or has a contact at Selmer, it would be great to have an update.

Thanks Ken and Ralph, its always difficult to date a clarinet to an exact year.
Strange, for such big manufacturers they don't have or don't publish a decent serial list.
Thats why I'm so glad that a lot of people share the same interests and share there knowledge on this BB.

After a lot of reading work I found this interesting link:

http://www.windinstrumentshop.com/catalog_neu/images/artikel/extra_selmer/claressentielang.pdf

The Selmer clarinet saga continued with the introduction of the 10 S
in August 1977, the mythical RĂ©cital in October 1984, the Prologue in March 1992, and the 10 S II in March 1994.

Today, I noticed an advertisement in Holland from a Prologue serial F9065, bought new in 1997. Could this date my Selmer 10S II to 1995/1996 ?

This Selmer obviously needs a special thumbrest (original is missing) as you can see in the picture, anyone familiar with this?

D prefix is from the late '80s, so F would probably be in the mid '90s at a guess.

PeterPC -

The Selmer publication is, shall we say, amusing. I can excuse the grammatical howlers as being the result of incompetent translation, but how can a supposedly expert source show a flopped photo of an Ab clarinet made perhaps 100 years earlier, or say that the alto clarinet "is a much sought after instrument and is particularly appreciated in chamber music"? The photo of Benny Goodman shows him playing a Selmer that is NOT a Centered Tone. Did the Marchi system really add an extra octave at the top of the range? Are ebony and grenadilla really the same wood?

There's some interesting material, but I think that when a clock strikes 13, it undermines not only that hour's indication but also everything else.

I do like the badly redone logo on page 11 - they could've at least tidied it up a bit more! http://www.windinstrumentshop.com/catalog_neu/images/artikel/extra_selmer/claressentielang.pdf
