 mouthpiece for adult beginner
Author: golfnclarinet

I’m setting up a Noblet clarinet for my friend who is adult beginner.
Clarinet is in excellent condition and I have to pick a mouthpiece for him.
I have followings in my drawer.
- Clark Fobes NOVA (Old version)
- Vandoren 5RVL
- Selmer C85/105
- Portnoy BP02

Bottom line is a Noblet stock mouthpiece but I want to give him a better one.
Please tell me which one works for beginner.

Thanks.

One thing to consider is that most stock mouthpieces are pitched higher because beginners lack a developed embouchure. Music directors began switching students to another mouthpiece when they were consistently sharp.

Of these, I prefer the 5RV Lyre. It's hard to go wrong with that one.

I would agree completely on the 5RV Lyre. A pretty standard mouthpiece for high school band, too.

I think that the 5RV is the best choice too. You also have to take into account the fact of your friend's BMI. If he is a big guy, you are going to need something with a bit more resistance, though, if he is smaller-average size, the 5RV is perfect.

One more thing to take into account is that the Noblet's are sometimes pitched slightly flat so you might have to have one of the stock mouthpieces which are pitched higher to bring up the pitch.

He is smaller than average.

I think I can give him 5RVL and stock mpc.

Thanks all of you.

The Vandoren is a standard choice. But-they are often inconsistent. Clark Fobes makes fine mouthpieces. From my experience with his products and having played the Nova, it is a better mouthpiece.

Gennusa Mouthpieces are GREAT Mouthpieces for all levels. If you live around the Maryland-DC area, seeing Ben in person to have him work with you is a real treat.
