 Ab piccolo clarinet video
Author: Bennett 2017

Several months ago I stumbled upon a video on the web of a women playing a selection on an Ab clarinet. As I recall, the same site had her demo'ing an Eb. Now after a half hour of Googling I can't find it again.

I remember (imagine?) the source was an instrument museum in the UK or Scotland. Similarly, I remember (imagine?) that I found the link in a site devoted to clarinets, weird and otherwise.

If anyone can point to me to the right place (and save me from spending a lot more time searching) I'd be most grateful.

Thanks

Hey this is very cool :)
Ab piccolo would be cool to have in a wind/marching band rather than the Eb soprano clarinet.

I've got enough trouble with the finger spacing on Eb clarinet, so I dread to think how things would be with an Ab sopranino!

When I was in college, I played the "Clarinet Polka" on an Ab picc clarinet as a novelty encore selection. It was a fun little instrument to play and always got a laugh when compared to a regular Bb. That clarinet was in my possession for three out of my six college years and I wish I had never given it back. Maybe, because of playing the Ab clar, I've never had issues with finger placement on any other clarinet--Eb, C, alto or bass. When switching, my fingers just seem to "feel at home".

No barrel I notice. Lesley Schatzberger plays it very well considering the tiny size - I find it a nightmare trying to play Chris P's old Eb let alone anything smaller! The Leblanc 1974 catalogue shows an LL Ab but there is no price, seems to be an extra key too between the low F and E.

At clarinetfest I asked Scott Kurtsweil about their Ab Clarinets. They sold the last one about 4 years and don't ever plan to make them again. Apparently they only sold one ever 4 or 5 years.

Lesley Schatzberger plays really well on the video. I did hear some intonation problems, and she had to use non-standard fingerings, particularly on second-ledger-line C and first-line G.

I've tried several Ab clarinets, including a Leblanc and a stencil made, I think in Italy, for Charlie Ponte, but I've never been able to get my fingers on the keys and holes.

By the way, there's some very fine G piccolo clarinet playing on http://www.naxosdirect.com/title/8.550228.

I don't understand why any Ab clarinet should have a barrel considering the little amount of bore it'll have (plus the potential for two gaps between the ends of the tenons and socket bases). Best make them of a certain length that gives the player the ability to pull the mouthpiece out a smidgin should they need to.

Leblanc used to make an Ab clarinet, but having just checked their official website, they no longer list one. Stranger, they do not list D or C clarinets, which they also previously sold.

BTW, in checking the other sites, none of which seem to make the Ab anymore, I found some great clarinet playing at the Patricola site. I wonder who the player is........???

I failed to mention that Scott is the Leblanc/Selmer guy at clarinetfest. He is always very helpful too. He did bring a D clarinet to the convention I believe but did not say if they were making them any more.

I have a pre-owned Leblanc Ab Sopranino that I had Morrie Backun go over about three or four years ago. We decided to do only what it took to bring the horn to its orginal new condition. It needed a new bell ring and a couple of pads, but other than that, it is mint! I do have fairly large hands and play bass, contra-alto, and the Leblanc paper-clip contrabass; so, yes, the little guy is a challenge!

Regards,

LCL
