It was some annoucement in the clarinet fest about this matter, someone can clarify what will exactly happen with this partnership, Buffet-Backun clarinets??

This means more outrageously expansive clarinets from Buffet, but they might actually be in tune. Wonder if they will make new E11s that will actually play in tune...

That's very strange. If someone knows the whole story let us know because we all know he makes, or at least designed, his clarinets for Leblanc which is owned by Selmer. Is he jumping over to Buffet or able to work for both competitors? The clarinet world wants to know, at least I'm curious. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

As I understand it - Morrie will sell Buffets. He will set up Buffets. He's not redesigning a Buffet, but can make adjustments if needed.

He's not designing a Buffet Clarinet like he does with Leblanc.
Anyone who works with him, or Morrie that would comment or change what I wrote, no problem, but that's how I understood it from hearing Morrie talk.

In other words - he's a Buffet Dealer also.

I got a chance to check out the Bliss Wooden Model - they are very good!!! I liked it better than the Cadenza.

I second that. The Bliss instruments were amazingly easy to play when I tried them a while back.

While I did not try them myself, when Julian was playing them, the Bliss clarinets seemed extremely easy to play.

I think this is probably true for ANY clarinet not just the Bliss ;)

Hey...all clarinets are easy to play when you're Julian Bliss!

If this is true, he must not be selling much of his Backun stuff. To become a Buffet dealer while still working for LeBlanc seems a bit desperate. But, even today, it's possible to price yourself out of the market. What goes around, comes around...?

Maybe it's just a rumour.

...Or he's selling as much of his stuff as he would like, but would still like to grow his business so he's broadening his field of influence.

Seriously. Without more information from someone who actually knows something concrete about the situation you can speculate it into any direction.

David, that makes a lot of sense. His pro clarinets are not meant for the mass market, they are more for a niche market so selling Buffets and making his own adjustments on them as he sees fit makes a lot of sense from a business point of view. ESP

1) I was joking. Of course the clarinet sounds "easy to play" when a player like Julian Bliss plays on it. The brand is irrelevant.

2) Just because someone is in a photograph doesn't mean that the fellow has joined the Buffet Mafia. But if you see his photo at the Post Office, then all bets are off.

3) By the way, I heard that Oliver Stone is shooting a new movie set in Vancouver, BC about an international spy ring and an instrument dealer. Maybe someone took Morrie's head from another pic and superimposed it into the one on FB. Just a thought.

4) Paul is the Walrus.

Ok here is the dope: Morrie was contracted by Conn-Selmer to design 5-6 clarinets. I think to this point he's done 4 the Bliss, Cadenza, Symphonie, Legacy. A bunch of things are involved in such an endeavor, the acoustical designing, production design, product launch and marketing. I think this was a great move on Leblanc's part, as anyone who played the new Wooden Bliss at Clarfest can attest. There are now some really good clarinets being built in the good old USA.
Morrie wears many hats. He is an instrument designer, instrument repair technician, and head of a company that makes and markets some amazing clarinet and accessories. Morrie's Company Backun Musical Services has always repaired, customized, and made accessories for Buffet clarinets. Now BMS will be selling new ones, with a formal dealer relationship. Morrie used the Les Paul as an example. Les Paul designed a guitar and Gibson makes and Markets it. Which is exactly the same scenario with the Leblanc clarinets.

Now for a little personal commentary. I have never heard Morrie "dis" Buffet clarinets . That being said I've never seen him look at a clarinet that he didn't think could be improved, Buffets, Yamahas, Leblancs and even the new MOBA clarinet that Ricardo plays. I've seen him tweaking Ricardo's custom Cocobola, a clarinet totally created from scratch by him. You live another day and you learn something new and you figure out a way to apply it. Morrie got a hell of a test pilot there and I'm sure that the Morrie's clarinet designs and products will continue to evolve as fine players place greater demands on their instruments.

Now what's this crap about the Buffet Mafia, to my knowledge nobody is "sleeping with the fishes" or missing any digits because they are playing something other than Buffet. This brand stuff has gotten more stupid than the "Ford/Chevy", "Mac/PC" thing. Pick out a clarinet and practice!!

What is a "MOBA" clarinet? If Ricardo is playing one, I've got to have it!

MOBA stands for "Morales-backun." It's a collaborative design between the two of them.

Probably because the wood is of the highest quality and they're manufactured in a country that offers all it's citizens health care. And because they're not made in some back alley Chinese sweat shop. But other than that I wouldn't know.

I have not only tried them, I play them all the time. mouthpieces, LeBlanc by Backun Clarinets and various bell and Barrels.

I just did my ICA concert on a Moba L mouthpiece, Symphonie clarinet with Cocobola barrel and a zebra wood bell. It played easy, in tune and with a nice
warm sound.

I'm not 100% sure on this but it seems to me that the new Protege barrel is less expensive than any of the Buffet replacement barrels Moenig and Chadash that I've seen advertised. The Bliss clarinet is as good of an instrument as one could need and that instrument is very inexpensive kessler music in Vegas has the wood Bliss for $1179. And this is an instrument that I would use on a gig, without it going on a hodge to Vancouver in a heartbeat. So the price of really high grade gear is getting cheaper.

My point to Sabinemeyerlol is that at first glance the price may be high, but until you actually play test the equipment you really have no way to determine its' actual value.

There have already been too many discussions between those who have (and speak with the authority of the experience) and those who haven't (and aren't contributing anything to the discussion except their reluctance to spend "that kind" of money).

I have tried Morrie's products in passing, but haven't given the time to a dedicated trial.

I purchased a Legacy clarinet 2 years ago and I love the warm sound it produces. The tuning throughout the clarinet ranges is consistent and warm in its sound. I perform in the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble and all the clarinets play with a Backun barrel and many with a Backun bell.
At my school many of my students play on a student Bliss clarinet. They love the look of their clarinets and the ease with which they can play higher register notes.
We are lucky to have a creative dedicated person like Morrie bringing new ideas to our clarinet world.

The Protege barrels that they're selling for $99 are just wonderful. They play as well as the ringless models at a lower price point (below that of a new Moennig or Chadash for a Buffet clarinet), and it doesn't hurt that they look great too. I picked up a few of them some months ago when they came out, and my students love them. They offered a noticeable improvement overall in resistance (less stuffy feeling) and intonation (improved twelfths and throat tones), especially on the beginning and intermediate model clarinets, which included several Buffet B-12's, one E-11, and a Yamaha YCL-450.
