ito -

This was the subject of a recent threat at http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=320040&t=319992. It gives an exercise taught by the great teacher Keith Stein, which I've been using for over 50 years to keep my altissimo under control.

There are many factors that are involved in achieving that. The mouthpiece and reed strength you use, how high or low your tongue is, if you're closing off your throat and if so to what extent. The way you voice in general, do you "sing" high or low when you play, what vowels you use if any to voice. How much breath support you use and how you use it. The way you form your embouchure and if you're pinching or not. Of course there's also your physical make up too. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

How high we talking?

Don't be afraid of them. Blow the crap out of them until you're comfortable, then you can learn to dial them back.

I switched from a Rico 2.5 to a Vandoren 3.0 and the quality of high notes (A and up) improved tremendously. You need a good quality reed that's hard enough to give you good timbral control but not so hard as to give you lung cramps.

Supporting the airstream is probably the most important thing --more so than "biting" to get the reed to vibrate fast enough to reach the note you want to make.

A sufficiently stiff reed is also required. If the reed's natural frequency of vibration is below the note you want, you're in a hopeless situation; and with a soft reed, that is the case.
