 Stranded in Dover New Hampshire
Author: cigleris

Hi Guys,

I'm stranded in Dover in New Hampshire. My time here was great and I have worked with some wonderful players. I'm losing gigs in London and wondered if anyone had any ideas of work I could do in New England. I'm here (fingers crossed) until the 25th April.

Thanks

Peter Cigleris

Peter,
Might you contact someone like Michael Norsworthy, at the New England Conservatory? perhaps he could provide some instant guidance?

Do some free clinics to help students. You'll enjoy it.

On the Morning Show weather, it looked as if the jet stream was about to shift to the north. However, lets hope that Iceland can keep the cap on that much larger near-by volcano that is showing signs of activity. Have you considered a boat????

A more general question relating to Peter's original question...how does anyone find professional playing work in such a short timeframe?

You could fly to Glasgow and train it back down if you need to get back pronto.

The volcano must be playing sub-bass havoc with entertainers who travel. I wonder whether orchestras, the musicians' union and music foundations still maintain lists where local people can sign up to offer stranded musicians lodging if they get stuck somewhere. That used to be common back in the 1950s and even the early 1960s, but with air travel getting so fast and reliable, I don't know whether stranded musicians can still find places to crash on short notice.

Hey, you could be in Doland South Dakota in the middle of a snow storm. ESP

This obviously isn't exactly what you're looking for, but if you want to hear some great clarinet playing tomorrow night, Anat Cohen is playing at Dartmouth. Would be fun if you're able to make the trip and can't find anything better to do.

Drop me an email if you want more info.

Peter,

This may be too late, but you could possibly contact the Community Music Schools in Portsmouth, Nashua, Manchester, and/or Concord to see about setting up masterclasses for their students. Just a thought ....

Thanks guys for the responses. Word has gotten round that I'm still in the area and as such gave two private lessons today and will be giving another class tomorrow in a local high school.

tdinap, thanks for the suggestion but I don't think I'll be able to get there. I don't have any wheels and I'm relying on my friend that I'm staying with. I don't want to be too cheeky as they are busy conducting their high school musical.

Any ideas on things to do during the day in Dover?

If you can get to Strawbery Banke (yep, that's the spelling), in the old historic section of Portsmouth, that's always fun. Prescott Park is near there, too, where there is usually something going on. There's a decommissioned submarine on dry display in Portsmouth right off of Route 95.

Odiorne Point (or Dover Point) is nice to stroll around this time of year, as are Hampton Beach and Salisbury Beach.

I wish I had more info for you. Perhaps your host friend could give you some better, more recent info about things to do in the Seacoast.

Peter -

Google seems to have eliminated the option, but for a while, they have directions on how to get from New York to London by car, which instructed you to swim across the Atlantic. http://thenewshole.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/04/19/153379.aspx

If you cover your clarinet case in enough bubble wrap, you could probably float across. [grin]

Hope you're airline has resumed flights.

Peter,

I am retired and I have a nice new car. I'd be willing to drive to Dover and pick you up and bring you to Middletown, Connecticut, where I live.

Middletown is the home of Wesleyan University, a very prestigious school, with a great music department led by Neely Bruce. Twenty five miles south, in New Haven is Yale University, where Davis Shifrin is head of clarinet department. Perhaps one these distinguished institutions would be willing to put you up in exchange for a masterclass or performance on your part.

Interested?

Well the sky's are blue again so you should be able to get home soon. Get out your charge card. I hope you enjoyed your stay in the USA even though it ended up longer than you planned. Have a great trip. ESP
