I can play all notes OK and with no leakage around the fingers for a squeek or squark but as soon as I put the register key on things get hard to play. Even when I keep my fingers down and the notes are flowing, without moving my fingers, just engage the register then I have to be supper critical of finger key sealing and a bit more pressure down is required. And of course the squeeks start
This has just started and I`m wondering what has happenend to my trusty Vito.

you maybe have a little crud in the speaker/register key hole. take off the key and ream out with a pipecleaner. Or maybe a pad problem on the bottom keys?

Fair enough Chris and thanks but if it was a lower pad key would`nt the difficulty be there as well when the register key is not used?

not necessarily. The chalumeau is comparatively easy to blow even if the clarinet is not 100% tight. The clarion, however...

Ben's right. A small pad leak that's just getting started causes trouble in the clarion notes first, and it will affect all the notes above the break that play when that pad is supposed to be closed.

It's an easy way to find out. Simply unscrew the key, take off the key, take a Q-tip and dip it on the Q-tip and simply insert the Q-tip into the hole. Often with that register key hole it is pretty small and you may have to take a layer off of the Q-tip. This whole process shouldn't take more than 3 minutes.
If this doesn't work maybe have a local repairman check out your horn.
