 R13 silver keys

Did vintage R13s (1965-75) have a silver key option? Most that I see for sale have nickel keys.

THey had both silver and gold plating options, but very few people ordered them this way. That was back in the day when the nickel plating was pretty decent and didn't flake off in a matter of months as it does today.

I've had all of my old R13's silver plated, except for one that I had done in gold, and have never regretted it. Back in the 60's, most clarinets routinely came in nickel and quickly tarnished or flacked, depending on the acidity of ones fingers. On my R13 Bb, my lh forefinger actually ate through the nickel on the Eb pad so badly it had to be re-sodered (I practiced a lot back then in sweaty little college practice rooms :>) But I think the answer to your question is, "yes", the silver option was available--but most of us didn't consider it. We just auditioned the clarinets as they came--with whatever plating.

Is there a strongly recommended place that does silver plating in the NYC area? I believe I can purchase an already overhauled R13; however, it is nickel keyed at this time.

Plating the keys in silver requires stripping the old plating, cutting and polishing the keys....and posts and socket rings.....and plating everything in silver. If the keys are unplated nickel silver you can eliminate the stripping.

If the clarinet has already been overhauled it will all be done again sans prepping the wood and tenon corks.
