 Custom M&M Mouthpieces (review)

As some of you may have read in a previous post about my Fobes CF+ problems, I've been having some problems in the last couple of years finding the right mouthpiece. Last Saturday at Clarinet Day at Cal State Fullerton, I met some wonderful people that represented Vacarro and Stevens Woodwinds. Mike Vaccaro is a wonderful person and let me play through pretty much an entire box of mouthpieces. He worked with me to find the one that gives me exactly what I was looking for in a mouthpiece. I went over to his shop to try everything out again yesterday and I literally found "the one." I have never worked with such an awesome person, to personally find exactly what I want. He will personally work with you to find anything in a barrel, bell, or mouthpiece that you are looking for. Not a big name on the market. But I have to say this is the best mouthpiece I've ever played on and is definitely a keeper. He also makes very fine barrels and bells for those who want to try something else other than Backun, no offence to Backun in any way. I definitely think those who are looking for, or considering a new mouthpiece, barrels or bells to definitely try out Mike Vaccaro's line. Fan...tastic mouthpieces.

It is always good to hear of a good experience. Can you give any more detailed info on what blanks he uses, what is the facing like, what is his tonal concept, playing qualities, etc.

Here are some details: He uses custom made Zinner blanks, of course as you know is pretty much the best blank out there. He doesn't really give a whole lot of detail on what the facing is. The reasoning behind that is because he wants you to find the best mouthpiece that you are comfortable with. He can tell you the numbers and all the sort but it's really more than just that - chamber, bore, facing, baffle table, etc. I believe if I was told correctly the one that I bought is a .039" facing which would be somewhere 'round a .99mm tip opening. However the resistance is more of that than my CF+ Fobes mouthpiece which has a 1.00mm tip opening. I believe the length is a little bit shorter than the Fobes, however it uses pretty much about the same reed strength to my liking - strength 4 V12, 4 Reserves, those strength sizes. His mouthpiece have a different variety of what you're looking for. I was looking for a mouthpiece that had a sweet, warm, dark sound, but was a little bit more free blowing than my previous Grabner mouthpiece, since it had a lot of resistance - too much for my liking. The Fobes had a nice sound to it, but it was too free blowing. So, I was looking for something in between the two mouthpieces as far as ease of playability and sound. Kinda combining to the mpcs I had. I hope this helps.
