A friend has an older Selmer pro bass clarinet and is looking for a new style highly angled neck. Selmer offers them as an aftermarket item at a price of $1300, which seems way out of the ballpark. Charles Bay is not responding to his inquiries. Are there any sources of these necks at reasonable prices?

The appear on Ebay occasionally. As well, people sell them occasionally on Sax on The Web forum.
Personally, I never saw a problem with the straighter necks.

You have to be careful if you buy an after market neck because the double register mechanism is different on many different models. You can't just put a neck made of one model on another, it may not work. Intonation can also be an issue. I play an older model from the early 60s. The neck isn't straight but not as bent as the newer models. I do have to keep my head bent back a bit but I've always done that. I don't suggest having the angle to straight up so it enters the mouth like a clarinet, it should not be straight up and down in my opinion. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

You may be able to find a repair person who can add some angle to the neck you already own. Mike Hammer in Philadelphia, who does all of my mechanical work, re-angled the neck of my old Leblanc bass. It isn't as vertical as some I've seen, but it does make a difference for me. I don't remember what Mike's charge was for doing it, but it was all shop time - no new parts involved - and very much below $1300.

Another thought...
If your friend is a DYI kind of person, there is some 'blueprints' on the Yahoo! new bass clarinet group of someone who did it themselves. They frequent these forms as well, but I do not remember the name.
(perhaps this will entice them to comment.)

I can't remember where I posted it, but some years back I put up some sketches and instructions for do-it-yourself neck re-angling. Perhaps this is what USFBassClarinet remembers?

I looked it up, it seems it the bass clarinetist was Mark Thiel.
I thought it was a home done remedy, but I was mistaken. It was done by Tim Werkema. He did give a detailed report, with scans, on the work done though.
