Selmer Standard vs. C85 Series Mouthpieces
Author: Ron
Date:   2010-02-10 10:12

What is the difference between the older "standard" Selmer clarinet mouthpieces in comparison with the C85 series? For example, how does the older standard series compare to the C85 series mouthpieces when the tip openings and the lengths of the facing are identical? Are there differences in the bore size, baffle, and/or other factors? Also, does anyone know if any of the C85 series mouthpieces work with new Rico Reserve Classic reeds? Thanks.

It's my guess that everything is different. Besides, what is an older "standard" Selmer MP, they made several types years ago. As far as if they will play with a Rico Reserve, that depends on the player. Any reed could work on any MP, depends on what you're looking for in a reed. Only way to know, is to try them. FWIW I prefer modern vandorens to modern selmers. Like any mass produced mouthpiece it's good to try as many as you can get your hands on.

I played on a C85 for the longest time. It was my understanding the chamber of the mouthpiece was completely different on those then on a standard series. I don't recall correctly but someone had said they were a round chambered small bored mouthpiece, I think it was Vytass Krass in some older threads.

They were introduced at a time when Selmer was beginning to make narrower bore clarinets.

Thanks to all of you for shedding some light on this question. Most of my colleagues and friends play on either hand finished mouthpieces by a variety of expert mouthpiece artisans or Vandoren mouthpieces. I know only one person who plays on a Selmer mouthpiece which is an oval stamp HS*. Many years ago when the Selmer 9 clarinet was in vogue, I knew many players who played on Selmer mouthpieces but that is not the case today in my circles. I have never played on any of the C85 series mouthpieces and would be interested to hear from clarinetists who either play or recommend them to their students. Understanding that different mouthpiece/reed combinations work for different people, I would be interested to know what brand/strength reeds work on various mouthpieces in the C85 series.

I used a C85 120 for several years in pit work. It was a good mouthpiece. It was a free blowing mouthpiece. For me the 120 was a strong projecting mouthpiece slightly on the bright side. It is similar to a B45 in opening. The 120 is a direct reference to being 1.20mm tip opening. I suspect the 1.15 and 1.10 models would be a little more conservative. I found these mouthpieces to be superiour to the HSstar models etc. older, They were very thin and edgy for me. As my memory serves me I used Vand traditional 3....3 1/2. In my travels I studied with a symphonic player who had used this model for a year or two so it isn't just a jazz mouthpiece although it would work very nicely in this genre.
