 All D Cancelled

1. Hello i know alot of you were members of all district/ all state band in High School/Middle School so i was just wondering what your thoughts were on this. I live in North Carolina (in the south), and there's a chance there might be some snow showers with the rain on the day of the clinic, so they canceled it the day before. Now there's a facebook group petitioning the cancelation(not rescheduled due to it being too much of a hassle) as well as a petition site http://www.thepetitionsite.com/241/petition-for-a-nc-central-district-all-district-band.

Anyone been through a similar situation? I've never imagined some like this could happen.

2. I accidently got a dash of permanent marker on my reed, do you think it's still safe to use it?

3. If you were the judge at an audition someone played the scales in the wrong order would you take off points for it?

THX ALOT!!

1. its extremely difficult to reschedule events of this nature due to bands having concerts, clinics, trips, already scheduled out for the rest of the semester. hopefully, they'll find a way to reschedule it.

2. yes.

3. yes.

"played the scales in the wrong order"

There's a "correct" order??? Or, rather, a "required" order? Unless that is the case, I would say, "no"--I would not subract points but give credit for accuracy and content played. In fact, even if the scales were played "out of order" but complete--and accurate--I would give full credit.

1--you are certainly getting BIG SNOW--hope rescheduling is possible.

2--yes

I actually hope they would reschedule, but that can be a difficult task. But because of the opportunity, I think it would be best for the students. Even if some couldn't make it, they could pull from the alternate list.

I actually remember having all state orchestra auditions when it was snowing (I'm also in NC). My band director didn't show up (we didn't have an orchestra director that year), and got in trouble, and ended up getting fired because of a sequence of similar mishaps. I ended up making 2nd Violin and Viola both in the honors orchestra though. I was truly grateful for the teacher that sponsored me that day!

1. Don't sweat the permanent ink, as long as it's dry.

2. If a judge took off points for playing scales out of order in a student competition or jury, he/she needs to get a life.

we have a required scale order, and format.

we post them clearly, in a huge font, taped to the music stand at the audition:
play the following:
1. chromatic
2. f major (concert Eb)
3. a major (concert g)
(or whatever 2 scales we select)

they are also told verbally to play them in that order.

they lose points for not following directions, or for not playing them the required number of octaves. they also lose points for tone, intonation, wrong notes, squeaks, stopping/restarting, and incorrect articulation. also for playing too slowly or too softly. or incorrect rhythm. or for not holding a steady tempo, or... you name it. they have to be perfect.

when trying to pick the top students out of a pool of 200+, the slightest fault is a deduction.

each region/district/state/competition has different rules of course. one need to follow whatever standards are in place at the contest.

1. Perhaps some sort of taping or recording process could take place. A panel could convene to listen to the submissions. This would require some coordination and forethought but might work.

2. Yes

3. Yes

(The rules are quite strict in Texas as stated above)

I'm from NC too, but I graduated already. I think my little brother had one of his things cancelled this year? As for playing scales out of wrong order, it depends on your judge. In NC, its CLEAR what order to play them in (circle of 5ths)

Also, if you make it to all state, they're clear on "tongued or slurred" etc.
My sophomore year at all state I tongued half of Bb, slurred the other half and I still got a decent score on the scale. I think I got like a 2.8 out of 3 on it from both judges.
