 Vintage Marlboro Clarinet?

Has anyone heard of a Marlboro clarinet? The clarinet I have only has Marlboro stamped in its bell. On the back it says it is made in France and has a serial number of K3285. This clarinet was bought in New York sometime in the 1950's for my Mother and the care instructions indicate it may have come from Carl Fischer Music Company.

I have done some research into this and I suspect it may have been made by Buffet as a stencil brand. It plays well and is in good condition. I am curious of its age and make. If anyone has any information, I'd love to hear!

These instruments were not made by Buffet in France- they were made in Malboro country, and may only be played by real men with cowboy hats.

Maybe so, but the type of real men who would want them can't play clarinet, because of lung cancer, heart disease and emphysema.

B&H did a version of the Edgware/Series 2-20 (wooden body, NP keys and with a metal bell ring) called 'Marlborough' - but these were clearly marked 'Made in England' and had a 6-figure serial number in the high 190000s and low 200000s.

Could you post some photos of it so we can have a go at working out what it could be?

Hmmm... wonder if it's a Malerne?

Chris P: it just might BE a Malerne! Carl Fischer was Malerne's USA agent at one time. That serial number should be a good clue but I'm not terribly knowledgeable about serial numbers (as I'm sure you remember).....

Interesting that it could be a Malerne. What are the characteristics of a Malerne and what were the serial numbers?

Clarinetperfection has some Malerne serials posted but not a K series although K3285 would be consistent with Malerne's format of ANNNN. This serial number doesn't seem to agree with any Buffet serials I can find....

If not Malerne, how about a Jerome Thibouville-Lamy (or JTL) clarinet?

I thought I read somewhere that Buffet serial numbers had letters infront and that there was a K series. Perhaps I am mistaken about this.

Evette & Schaeffer clarinets have a K prefix, as do E13 and (I think) C12 clarinets.

I'm not sure if this will help in th mystery surounding this clarinet, but the keys appear to be sterling silver (not nickle silver or silver plate).

Do you know if Malern or any of the other French makers made keys our of sterling silver?
