I am now suffering through a bout of deal galore indecisiveness. I think I bought this upon myself for wanting to fool around in a music store, looking up ebay... and other things. In this case, it'd be...
1. Orsi and Weir cocobolo Bb, store demo model, $2100 USD after tax.
2. All Grenadilla Bliss clarinet, new, $900USD
I immediately wound up going in my head about:
E11 vs that Bliss
R13 vs that Orsi and Weir
I have to admit, I am liking the characteristic of the Orsi and Weir comparing to the R13s that I played with in the same shop. The Wooden Bliss is very similar to the composite Bliss that I already have, with a bit of a more warm sound...
So now I am having a mental tug of war. The 'against' side of me is saying that:
-Orsi and Weir or R13's too much of a horn for a slob like me, so why even think about it? I haven't even had a teacher for pete's sake.
-Paying $900 for a bit of a warmer sound comparing to my current horn and get susceptibility to crack the horn in cold weather? That and getting Backun bell with the composite body seems to do it for me...
-Tom Ridenour's "hard rubber stability" argument.
the 'for side' of me on the other hand...
-Orsi and Weir, $2100...
-sell the composite and get the wooden bliss, since I don't go out to play at all.. and that's 10 years warranty on the said wood.
I suppose that this has happened to you all before... anecdotes and cold bath of reality are all quite welcomed in this case.

Buy the one(s) that you enjoy playing most. Try not to be overly impressed by appearnaces--pretty wood, cool shapes (Backun, etc)--but that which really feels good in your hands and sounds favorable to your ear. It is not unusual to find an intermediate instrument that will out-play a professional model--or an older, used R13 to play better than a new Prestige or Rossi. Play them all in as many playing venues as you can--different rooms, bands, etc--and for a musician friend, if possible. The more ears, the better. And always remember, if you find--weeks, months, years, from now--that you might have made the *wrong* decision, you can always do what I have done--put it in the junk closet and buy something else. Whatever, enjoy what you play....that's the bottom line.
