 Crack weirdness
Author: Rapidcif

a few weeks ago my friend had big crack in this wooden clarinet. Today i saw him with his clarinet and the crack was barely visible. I asked him how he fixed it and he said all he did was not play his wooden clarinet for a few weeks, and instead played his plastic clarinet. Anyone have any insight on this scenario?

The crack has closed...but it's not fixed. When a shop gets a badly cracked instrument in, they often let it sit unplayed for a few days to let the crack close up a bit before filling or pinning it.

The crack most likely will open again when they start playing their wood clarinet again. This is not a repair.

Merlin is right, but some repairers prefer to repair a crack while it is not closed.

On nearly any other bulletin board, this thread header would refer to something else entirely....

This is why I always ask customers to mark the crack with a pencil. They almost always close and are hard to detect by the time I get to them. Just draw a pencil over the crack through the entire length of it. It will help your repair tech locate it correctly.
