 Opinions: Leblanc/Backun Legacy

I might have the opportunity to obtain a Legacy (about 1 year old) for a rather reasonable price compared to what a new one costs.

For those of you who have actually played one (I intend to give it a thorough trial before purchasing) what were your impressions of the instrument? Anything you didn't like about it? This one would be a Bb instrument; I don't really do orchestral work at all any more, so I wouldn't need the companion A clarinet, most likely.... at least not at present!

Thanks in advance...

Jeff

These clarinets are spectacular. I've played them since they were introduced in 2006, and spent a good amount of time with Morrie Backun studying them and what went into the design and production. The tone they produce is beautiful, and their pitch is dead-on (although I use 67mm barrels instead of the included 66).

Feel free to contact me off-line if you have any other questions.

I found them to be less than spectacular. I didn't like the sound or tuning, and found them to be quite uneven in response, especially in the lower register.

They obviously work well for some people, but not for me.

They are very, very good. I have a student with one and he likes it a lot.

And what did you think of the two you played? Were either of them Bb models?

Yes, one was a Bb. I thought it was a good clarinet. I didn't have much time to check the mechanics thoroughly (or disassemble anything) but I don't remember noticing any problem imediately. I didn't find any imediate problems with tone, intonation, etc. either. Personally I wouldn't play this clarinet but that is just preferance since I like other clarinets more. This doesn't mean much for what you'd think about it.
