 Evette Master Model?
Author: Bru
Date:   2010-01-18 03:36

I am looking for information on a Clarinet that was just given to my daughter. We were talking to friends about getting her a better instrument and one of them said she had this one in the basement. It looks to be in nice shape. It is labeled Evette made by Buffet Crampon Paris France Master Model.
Serial Number D35129. Please send any information on the age, quality or other characteristics of this intrument.

Based on what I have read about, the D series with that serial should have been made by Buffet Crampon (not sure if it's over their main factory though) in Paris over the 70s to 85.

http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=250203&t=250203 has mentioning of one such Evette, as have http://en.allexperts.com/q/Clarinet-2214/Buffet-Evette-Clarinet.htm

If Wiki is right, the successor to the Evette master line is the E12, and this intermediate instrument seems to be rather popular. I cannot comment on the quality of the instrument nor the characteristics since I've never own one.

Your answer will probably be found by reading all the posts that come up using the Search function here. It is voluminous.

I don't know specifically about the date, but my wife had (and still has) an Evette Master Model from the late '60s or early '70s. It was a very nice instrument and played pretty well. It got my daughter through her beginning years also on clarinet, and then I played it after I bought her my old R13 from its current (at the time) owner. After she started on the R13, I played it for a couple of years until I got my Lyrique. My daughter currently uses it as a backup when her R13 is in for service. She needs a decent backup now, as she is in music school.

The Evette MAster Model is a very noce intermediate level instrument.

There was a time that the Master Model was rumored to actually be Buffet rejects because of some small defect in the wood. Sort of like when you buy a second in some product and can't find the imperfection. That rumor was probably not true but I believe it came about because many of them were equally as good as the professional Buffet at the time. I myself choose several for my students in the 70s and I often found them to be as good, and in some instances even better, than the professional models I was trying at the time. As we all know, clarinets are very inconsistent even within the same make and model. If you're lucky you got one of their better ones. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Ed, I think you are confusing the Evette & Schaeffer Master Model with the Evette Master Model. They are not the same. A v-e-r-y few E&S Master Models that were rejected R13's have surfaced. These are numbered in the R13 (and other professional soprano clarinet) sequence with serial numbers below 70000 that have no prefix. I've only heard of about three.

Bru, the Evette Master Model was probably an Evette that was promoted because it played particularly well in its final testing. I have an Evette master model, serial number D36xxx that dates to 1976 so I think yours should date to 1975 or '76. (Unfortunately, the old Buffet serial number lookup that had serial numbers for the D-series Evettes no longer exists.) New, the instrument was a good quality student/intermediate model.

Best regards,
jnk
