 "Vintage" Selmer crystal mouthpiece
Author: RedheadK

I recently purchased a "vintage" Selmer crystal mouthpiece. It seems to be in near perfect condition. It has what looks like handwritten etching on it that says "Selmer" and "HS++ Clarion".

I cannot find any technical specs about the mouthpiece anywhere on the net. Can anyone tell me anything about it, like specs and age? It seems to be a lot like my Gennusa GE star mouthpiece.

Thank you!

Who cares?? If it has a good sound and articulates easily--and you like it--what difference would knowing the specs make? If it plays good, sounds good, tunes good and articulates good, then it is GOOD--even if only in your own mind (and on your clarinet). Personally, I've never played a Selmer crystal mpc that I liked--they all seemed quite stuffy. Too much worry about numbers, models, who made what with whose blank, etc. If it plays, it plays--end of story.

BTW--I'm sorry I really don't have any helpful info regarding your mouthpiece :>)

Hi RedheadK, I have a very similar Selmer glass mp, but I can't find the original facing designation , where is your HS** located? Mine, as I recall, was too close for {my} comfort, so, along with several other mps, had David Spiegelthal reface it to a more open tip , mediun length lay, much better for me! His records may have these dimensions. Sselmer had/has? a set of facing letters with stars, like on a number of my Sel H R mps, which designations may be available via the YahooGroup MouthPieceWork website, which may be what you are looking for. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

The HS** facing on Selmer ebonite mouthpieces is quite open (either 1.15 or 1.20 mm I think) so I would assume that HS** would mean the same on crystal. But of course assumptions can be wrong!!

I don't recall their facing designations, but some years back I tried a couple of Selmer crystals and if I remember correctly they were quite closed (and stuffy). Reminiscent of many of the O'Brien crystals. My thanks to Don B. for his kind words, but unfortunately I have no measurement records on any mouthpiece I've refaced, for the simple reason that I don't use measurements at all....... [huh]
