 Recommended Bass Clarinet Solos
Author: kporter24

Hi! I have a 12 grade student who will be doing several college auditions in a few months on bass clarinet. Can anyone recommend a good solo to audition on that is considered "reputable literature"? Thanks!

Bass clarinetists "should" be able to play anything a Bb Soprano clarinetist could.

That said, I'm finding that it's a little harder for my current bass clarinet student to feel confident playing "higher" pitches. I've got her working on a soprano clarinet adaptation of a Bach cello suite, done by Kynaston. This edition transposes the originals, but unlike the Leduc version, keeps them more playable on any Bb clarinet. I think the highest pitch is around A5-B5

Monolog by Isang Yun(originally for bassoon). It's difficult but I'm not sure if it's terrible difficult. Jackdaw for bass clarinet and tape by Wayne Siegel is also great. Monologs by Erland von Kogh have also the option of being performed on the bass clarinet. I don't play the bass clarinet so these are just ideas of works I've come across or heard in recitals.

Does your student have access to a low C bass clarinet, or just the low Eb?

It makes a difference what pieces to recommend. I think the Weber "Adagio and Hungarian Rondo" (originally written for bassoon and orchestra) makes a great audition piece but it requires a low C instrument.

Hello,

Thanks to Mr. Grabner above me I discovered that piece on his mouthpiece page. It is a thrill to play it on bass actually. Howard Klug has his own transcription that works very well on bass clarinet.

I believe he (could have been someone else) recently made a recommendation about a piece out of the Rubank Contest book. The Hervig sonatina I believe.

Perhaps a little easy for college auditions, but the piece I did for mine was the standard Bozza Ballade.

I know a lot of bass clarinetists use the Bach Cello Suites for these kinds of things too since they are unaccompanied. Almost everyone I know likes the Alea publication of them.

I heard someone play the Jeanjean Clair Matin recently that went over well.

Another is about to play the Georges Marty 1st Fantaisie.

Perhaps the David Bennet Deepwood is too easy but it is always a fun (but slightly awkward jazzy section) to play.

If they are up to some fast slap tonguing, or perhaps not doing the slap tongue movement, Dubois Voltage Suite is a decent one as well.

Another easier piece, but one I find interesting is the Michael Kibbe Sonata. It is written in a Hindemith style to 'finish' the sonatas that he missed.

I am sure I will come up with a few more if you are still at a loss.

Good Luck!

Yes it's true, you can play anything written for the Bb clarinet on bass if you are capable of playing it but the Bozza Ballad is one of the most standard pieces today. Very accessible too. If it's played in tempo the ending can be a challenging but quite effective. Anyone playing the Bach cello suites should play them using the cello part in bass clef, not a transcription in my opinion. (You can hear the Bozza and some Bach on my website). The Weber Concertino is very effective on the bass if you can play it. Also, any of the Rose 32 Etudes are very effective as well. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Schumann Romances. Usually written for oboe, but Schumann actually anticipated that they would be played on clarinet. Get a midi and transpose. Very nice.
