Thanks for the information. As the article mentioned, besides being a fine clarinetist and band leader, Dick Johnson was a first-rate teacher. I had the good fortune to study with him at Berklee. I remember Dick as being an inspiring and encouraging teacher.

Very sorry to hear this; I had heard he was not doing well the last few years.
I toured with the Artie Shaw Band a few years ago with Dick leading; he was a fine man and a marvelous musician. RIP.

In the 80's I had the experience of working with Dick Johnson in a series of children's concerts in the Boston Area. It was an orchestral gig. I don't remember the theme of the concerts, but one of the pieces we did was the cabaret music from "Star Wars." Dick played a few choruses on soprano saxophone, and what made the concerts memorable was the fact that each time he played it was totally different from the other times.
One of the other pieces we did was "Pacific 231" by Honegger. It requires three clarinets, and since there were only two of us for all the other pieces Dick played the 3rd clarinet part.
I'm proud to say that one of my former students played with Dick in the Artie Shaw band in the 80's as well.
