 Hindemith Sonota CD
Author: janlynn
Date:   2010-01-08 18:55

Since I will be playing this in the spring, my teacher suggested I get a recording (CD not youtube) of it. The one I selected she did not approve. She said the clarinetist is not someone she would want me to emulate.

I did some searches and have either not heard of the clarinetist, or the recording was no longer available.

Can someone lead me to a good recording of this? Where is a good place to buy clarinet music CD's in general too?

Thanks

John Bruce Yeh of the Chicago Symphony made a nice recording of this piece. I think it is easy to find on Amazon.

There are some good recordings on iTunes. I just played this piece this past semester and the recording I have is the one by Anton Nel & Fred Ormand.

I could not find it on Amazon. I found music by Hindemith, but not the Clarinet Sonota.

At least this time, spelling is important. If you spell Sonata with an "a," you'll find many recordings. http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_i_1?rh=i%3Apopular%2Ck%3Ahindemith+clarinet+sonata&keywords=hindemith+clarinet+sonata&ie=UTF8&qid=1262990558

I highly recommend Jonathan's Choler version of this sonata.

This has been one of my most played clarinet cd (have around 150 including some wind music ensembles and jazz and in total I have around 500 cds)

Thanks Ken, I got that anyway by spelling it wrong, but it says chamber music - that isnt what I want is it?

"She said the clarinetist is not someone she would want me to emulate"

Does that mean that you'll be emulating the clarinetist of the recording that you DO buy? Is this really a good reason to buy a recording?

NOt exactly. I mean, I'm not going to purposely try to imitate him or her, but if I'm going to choose a clarinetist to "look up to" (or listen to) she doesnt want it to be the one I chose because of "flying fingers and uneveness".

Of the recordings that are readily available at Amazon, I don't think you can go wrong with either John Bruce Yeh or Jonathan Cohler (who, IMO, plays the work with color but not choler :)). Two other recorded performances that I think are quite good are those by Karl Leister and Diane Lang Bryan. Neither of those is likely to be easy to find at a reasonable price, however.

BTW, works for a solo instrument and piano are considered chamber music. Yeh's recording of the sonata is coupled with other chamber pieces with clarinet by Hindemith, including his clarinet quartet and quintet. Cohler's recording is coupled with works for clarinet and piano or clarinet solo by other composers.

Best regards,
jnk

The cd with John Bruce yeh is great and I would love to have one myself. I've never heard him before but I think he sounds a little bit similar to Jonathan Cohler but of course differently.
