 Nice idea, lousy execution

Did anyone catch the halftime show at the college football national championship game last night?

The Alabama marching band did a Gershwin number with a CLARINET solo of all things.

It was overamplified to the point of distortion, making it tough to tell if the kid playing it was any good - he wasn't bad technically.

Was just something I never expected from a marching band, particularly on such a big stage.

I was in another room, but thought I heard something to the effect, "assist professor of clarinet.....". What I caught of the performance, I didn't see any camera coverage of the clarinetist (whomever it was), but I didn't think that the amplification was inappropriate. Afterall, it was just one clarinet vs a huge, pumped up college marching band--and outside on the 50 yrd line in a stadium of 100,000 plus. I've marched there, and it looks just as big from the field as it does from the blimp. Give the accoustical techs a break--they did what they thought was best. The big plus was that it was a CLARINET featured rather than the usual screech trumpet, percussion section or tubist dotting the "I". A little camera time would have been nice--or did I just miss it??

Nope, you didn't miss it, there was no camera time. And I agree, it was a tough thing to do to set up amplification for things like that. I've also played in some big(ger) stadiums, but only as part of the band, not the feature player.
