I just found the Bauhaus Walstein plastic bass to low Eb has the double speaker mechanism: http://www.woodwindandbrass.co.uk/acatalog/buffetcrampon_jupiter_bass_clarinets.html but I can't comment on their reliability. I know people rave about their saxes but a bass clarinet will have to be pretty sturdy to survive.
Is this the only plastic bass to low Eb with this mechanism? Most plastic basses (to low Eb) don't have this and are usually based on a pretty similar design being more like Bundys or Vitos.

I assume this is made in China just like most (all) new similar bass clarinets. I've tried a bunch of these Chinese bass clarinets and I think some low Eb models had the double register mech but I can't remember for sure. Anyway sometimes the same factory makes both types and it wouldn't be a problem for them to do this for a low Eb model. My impression of Bauhaus-Walstein is that they are more involved and have more influence than most about what they want the factories to make.

The people who own and run Woodwind and Brass, last time I was in contact with them, are hugely friendly, very happy to be visited, and are not at all very far from where you are.
I am sure they wouldn't mind you going and having a good look at the instrument.

Looks like an ideal bass if you want a more compact second (or 'all weather') instrument to save playing your cherished low C wooden bass in adverse conditions, provided the keywork is robust.
I'm around half an hour's drive from Cowplain, though I'll wait until the conditions are more favourable before going over there as I doubt the grit lorries have been round their streets due to the A3 being more of a priority at the moment.

Hi Chris, I;ve looked at many basses, mostly to Eb, to find a "DRK" equipped model, among oldies, Pedler had it also on Alto !!, Conn woods of the ?1940's?, my good Selmer 31-33, all somewhat diff. The newers were Sel 47 and comparable Buffet low C models. I tried out the Ridenour early models, believe they had it also. I have a couple of Yamaha patents showing their 1990 designs [ inv. Yamargo, I believe], but talking to reps at meetings, they didn;t know [or understand] what I was looking for . I[m sure you or Steve S can find posted sales brochures, hopefully with details. Also, Dave S is prob. quite familiar with ever other DRK's. Interesting, Don
