 Leather Mouthpiece Caps
Author: jacoblikesmusic

Are these caps worth buying? I was looking for a ligature to try out and one of them came with either a plastic or leather cap, but the leather cap was 15 dollars more.

Is it just the material making it worth more or are there any advantages of a leather cap over a plastic cap.

I'm getting a string ligature and a leather ligature and if the leather cap would protect the ligature in any way, then I might consider getting it.

One of the posters gave a story of a principal dropping a metal cap onto the floor during a quiet period in a symphony. If there ever was a "general" reason for a leather ligature it would have been then.

but you don't want a metal cap with a string or metal ligature - think premature wear & cuts on the ligature. So leather is probably best with the string and leather and plastic for the leather lig.

I have not had a metal cap tear into my battschnur but I am VERY pro leather cap!!

If there is any drawback, it is that they are..........soft. So putting in your pocket while playing can slightly distort the form.

As far as the QUIETNESS goes, this CANNOT be oversold. It is a godsend to have a cap that does not clang!! Of course in the real world, if you drop it and you don't realize until later that you dropped it, you may wind up having lost it and having to re-order another (I speak from experience).

I disagree. They need a better principal who knows when and when not to manipulate instrument accessories during a concert.

In 25 years of university and professional performance (including over 100 performances in 2008, for example) I have never once experienced a mouthpiece cap being dropped by either myself or a colleague. No disrespect intended to those who have, I am just honestly recounting my experience.
The only reason I can think of to buy a leather mouthpiece cap would be if it was designed specifically to work with a string ligature. If $15 (US$?) is a lot to you then you will survive without it.
Btw- I have also met professional players with decades of experience who claim to have never used a mouthpiece cap except when storing their mouthpiece. Again, I am not suggesting that you follow this advice, but letting you know that there are people who have done this with no ill effects.
