It is an 'Evette & Schaffer Modele Buffet-Crampon' and the serial number is 3118 (without a prefix).

Judging by the serial number this clarinet is made in 1930's by Malerne for Buffet Crampon. There's very small possibility it's rejected pro instrument made by Buffet. Please post the pictures for identification.

I have just received an email from Buffet-Crampon Head Office '5 rue Maurice Berteaux 78711 Mantes-la-Ville - France'. She claimed that this clarinet was manufactured in 1951 and is a 'student model'.

I have been thinking a 'modele' is an E13. Is she saying that E13 is a student model?

I will post the photos this weekened.

Because there is no prefix, I would have expected, like Vytas, that your instrument came from the 1930s. However, the adjusting screw on the throat G# key and the two posts on the left hand pinky keys, combined with a shared post for the throat A and G# keys would be more consistent with manufacture in the early 50's. Based on what I've seen in the past and "experimentation" with the Buffet serial number list, I would have expected an E&S from 1951 to have a K-prefix and be in the 3xxx range. (The earliest E&S I can find in the Buffet list has the serial number, 3988. This dates from early 1952. Tracking serial numbers forward from this starting point eventually leads to higher-numbers which definitely did have the K-prefix. Buffet omits prefixes from the current serial number list. The plot thickens.)

I'm not sure of their current classification but, in past advertising literature, Buffet has indeed categorized the E11, E12 and E13 all as student models. At that time, they did not designate any of their models as "intermediate."

Best regards,
jnk

"The Evette & Schaeffer Model E-13 clarinet is built in its entirety in the Buffet factory. The same wood and same bore is used...." http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/download.html/1,270/E&S-30s.jpg

The statement in the brochure applies to the Evette & Schaeffer "K-series" instruments ONLY.

Many Evette & Schaeffer clarinets have been made by other companies for Buffet. For instance the A, B and even some K-series E&S clarinets were made by Malerne. The clarinet in the pictures was not made by Buffet. This is not a Buffet's keywork.

Judging from the photo's it is a good looking instrument by any standards for 50 plus years old. Its very difficult to track down the history of older instruments. I acquired a 68 Buffet "Super Dynaction" 103xxx eight years ago. Until now, I only know of 3 including mine and still looking. Judging from the serial number ranges apparently thousands were made. It plays well. [toast]
