I tried doing something rather similar for awhile. I ended up breaking two pieces of glass and stopped after that.

I have something similar that I use for my "in-progress" cane reeds, but it consists of one piece of thick glass that was used in a grocery store checkout counter, as the plate over the optical scanner.
When it became too scratched on the outer surface they gave it to me for free. I just flipped it over and use the smooth side. It's lasted for over 25 years thus far.
