Got a woodwind ensemble I'm trying to piece together at church that includes high schoolers and two adults. Currently, our active members include a bass clarinet (me), an English horn, an alto sax, two Bb clarinets, an oboe, and a flute. Odd combination, perhaps, but that's what we've got. We've played a few times already, and depending on who can come, we're a group of 5, 6, or 7.

The only thing we've played from is the Salvation Army holiday books, which have 5 parts that are pretty much interchangeable. For instance, part 1 is mostly melody, and we have a book for a C or Bb instrument. I think our part 2 book is in F for the English horn, but we also have a copy in C. We have part 3 in Bb and for sax. Part 4 is considered the bass part, and that's in Bb or in C, and part 5 is optional, with some descants and other "frilly" passages in Bb.

Are there other musical arrangements that are organized like this that aren't holiday-related? Seems to be working well since we never really know who's going to be able to come on any given gig. We can pass around part books, make sure at least 4 parts are covered in each instrument's correct key, and sound like we know what we're doing...for the most part.

There are several hymnals that have a series of instrumental books with editions for different keys of instruments across the parts. One Catholic hymnal, GIA's Worship III, has such as series of books that can be used together by a mixed comibination of instruments:

Check out the "120 Hymns for Wind Band" by Wright&Round (formerly known as the "red book", now they're blue and include woodwind parts as well).

The whole series contains 28 parts.

Very good harmony stuff, technically easy so that you can concentrate on sound.
