When the District/Regional Audition throws a curve ball
Author: DavidBlumberg

Hey, any stories of your District or Regional Audition throwing you a curve ball?

Last year a student of mine was asked for the chromatic scale "Tongued up and Slurred Down" - he did a double take on that one.

The audition information specifies **slurred up and tongued down**.

Another year a student told me that they were asking for the Cadenza when the judges are specifically told NOT to use a cadenza in the audition.

So be prepared for anything, it can and maybe will happen.

When the time comes for me to hold auditions, there will be nothing BUT curve balls. :P

When I was still a college student I took the audition for principal clarinet for the New Orleans symphony and the conductor asked me to play a chromatic scale in the "French" style. I played it staccato but still don't know if that's what he meant. Surprise! ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
